Dr. Patricia A. Wood studied Microbiology and Medicine at the University of Minnesota, during which time she completed her undergraduate training with honors, and doctoral and clinical training. In her Ph.D. work, she delineated the biochemical changes and functional basis for chloroquine drug resistance and sensitivity in the erythrocyte stage of the malaria parasite. She then completed an Hematology fellowship at the University of Minnesota and a Medical Oncology fellowship at the Albany Medical College in Albany, New York. She is board certified in Medicine, Hematology, and Oncology. Her research has included studies of membrane protein and biochemical changes associated with the erythrocyte stage of malaria infection and changes with resistance to anti-malarial drugs; pre-clinical and clinical anti-cancer drug toxicity and efficacy studies; clinical cancer treatment trials through NCI, pharmaceutical and local institutional sponsored programs; and investigations of the effects of biologic rhythms, such as daily (circadian) rhythms and fertility cycle rhythms, on the balance between host and cancer in pre-clinical and clinical settings. She is the recipient of the American Cancer Society Career Development Award, Department of Veterans Affairs RAG and MERIT Review funding and National Institutes of Health research funding. She has authored over 40 papers and has written several invited reviews in her area of expertise. She has mentored undergraduate, graduate, postdoctoral students and medical students in laboratory and clinical research projects. Dr Wood is currently the Chief of the Oncology/Hematology Division of the Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia, South Carolina and Associate Research Professor in the Department of Pathology in the School of Medicine at the University of South Carolina and a member of the South Carolina Cancer Center of Palmetto Health Alliance. |
